Breaking It Down: Lactic Acid Metabolism.
Lactic acid is a normal energy source for our bodies. When we're physically active our mitochondria produces copious amounts of it to keep up with energy demands. When we produce more than our body can utilize, lactic acid accumulates in the blood and is associated with fatigue. Typically excess lactic acid goes to the liver and gets converted into glucose.
We discovered that a portion of lactic acid associated with fatigue enters into the gut and serves as a carbon source for our microbiome. V•Nella is unique in its ability to metabolize lactic acid from your muscles and convert it to short chain fatty acids (SCFAs). These SCFAs in turn can go back into your muscles to power mitochondria as an energy source and can have anti-inflammatory effects through our cells and immune system.
